BUILT THE PASSAGE FOR FISH ON THE RIO SANTA MARIA 03 Aug

BUILT THE PASSAGE FOR FISH ON THE RIO SANTA MARIA

In these hot days of midsummer, the project does not stop: in fact, the construction of the fish passage near a bridle on the Rio Santa Maria, in Bojano has just finished.

The study of the movements of native trout in the Biferno basin has shown us that large breeders need the greatest freedom of movement to complete the entire biological cycle, from birth, to growth, to reproduction. Any horizontal barrier – such as a bridle, a concrete threshold or a dam – can prevent movement and erode the natural reproductive capacities of populations. Often the obstacles can also occur at those artificial barriers that are potentially surmountable by trout, but which in any case constitute a difficult obstacle to the ascent.

In fact, due to these barriers (and also in relation to the amount of water present in the river) the trout can concentrate and stop more than necessary, thus exposing themselves to greater dangers such as those coming from ichthyophagous birds or illegal fishing.

Thanks to the strategic laying of cyclopean boulders and stones, criticalities have been eliminated in this section of the Rio Santa Maria, making the ascent of the fish easier and more fluid. One more step towards complete river reconnection has been taken.
