In the Volturno, the ascent of the first males is about to begin

The first males of the Volturno are about to go up the sides for reproduction and it is time for most of the young born in spring to let themselves be carried away by the current and reach the main course where they will reach sexual maturity: the few young trouts that do not let themselves be carried towards the valley in this period they will remain for the whole life in the lateral ones.

It is difficult to recognize Mediterranean trout when they are a few months old, but the number and shape of the parr spots along the side can help: the individual in the photo is indigenous and has a main series of 14 narrow Parr spots along the side (those kind of bluish-gray fingerprints). The more they are numerous and narrow, the more we have a hint of Mediterranean character. But if this young individual grows up in the Volturno, we know that he will soon lose the Parr spots in favor of the zebra stripes; if he, on the other hand, grows up in the stream where he was born, it will still be possible to see them in part among the streaks of the zebra stripes and background coloring. In short, the Mediterranean trout are not all the same, each population makes its own story.
