Autumn monitoring

NatsalMo monitoring activities began in September to observe the results of the last breeding seasons. During the sampling, tissue samples were also taken to be sent to in-depth genetic analyzes such as SNPs: we need these analyzes to continue to monitor the improvements in the genetic integrity of the populations we are working on.

Pending genetic analyzes, however, we can already say with satisfaction that in the Biferno and Volturno there are a large number of small trout born in spring from natural and semi-artificial reproduction. Even in those side streams where we have reintroduced native trout, after eradication of allochthones, the results are encouraging.

In the Volturno basin, on the Torrente Lorda in Castelpizzuto (where in the spring we had intervened together with the Municipal Administration) the scrapers and pools are full of small trout 8-9 cm. Here in the photo you can see how many individuals we have captured in no more than 15 meters of watercourse!

In the Biferno basin, on the other hand, in the upper Quirino valley, the first individuals born in 2020 begin to show different mountain liveries compared to those living in the lower course of the river: next year the most precocious ones will reach sexual maturity and they will be ready for the first natural reproduction.
